Types of Furnaces

Gas Furnaces

If natural gas is available near your home, we highly recommend installing a gas furnace.

Benefits of Gas Furnaces:

  • Efficiency: Gas furnaces are very efficient, converting most of the energy from the fuel into heat.

  • Cost effective: Idaho has some of the lowest natural gas rates in the nation so you don’t have to break the bank to keep your house cozy warm.

  • Reliability: Gas furnaces are also very reliable, with few moving parts to break down.

  • Comfort: Gas furnaces provide an even and consistent heat throughout your home.

  • Cleanliness: Gas furnaces produce very few emissions, making them a clean and environmentally friendly option.

  • Warranty: Gas furnaces come with a 10 year parts and 20 year heat exchanger warranty.

Common Gas Efficient Furnaces:

85% Efficient

Perks:

  • More affordable than a 95% efficient furnace.
  • Reliable and durable.
  • Easy to install and maintain.

Drawbacks:

  • Not as efficient as 95% efficient furnaces so your gas bill will be slightly higher than if you install a 95% efficient furnace.
  • Produces more emissions than a 95% efficient furnace. (only 10% more)
  • If you are converting from another heat source the venting may be more costly.

95% Efficient

Perks:

  • Very efficient, which can save you money on your gas bill.
  • Environmentally friendly with low emissions.
  • Comfortable and even heat distribution.

Drawbacks:

  • More expensive upfront cost than an 85% efficient furnace. The furnace itself is more expensive and may require more parts for installation than an 85% efficient furnace.
  • May require more maintenance over the lifetime of the furnace.

Many 95% efficient furnaces qualify for a rebate from Intermountain Gas.

Electric Furnaces/Air Handlers

If natural gas is not available in your area you may require the installation of an electric furnace.  We highly recommend installing a combination of a heat pump with all electric furnaces to save on electric energy costs.  Installation of this combination could save you thousands of dollars on your electric bill  over the lifetime of the equipment.

Benefits of an Electric Furnace

  • Clean: Electric furnaces do not produce any emissions, making them a clean and environmentally friendly option.

  • Quiet: Electric furnaces operate very quietly, making them ideal for homes with bedrooms located near the furnace.

  • Easy to maintain: Electric furnaces have few moving parts which means less repairs and longevity of the unit.

Ductless Systems

Some people refer to ductless systems as mini-splits.  No matter what you call them, these units provide very efficient heating AND cooling.  Many homeowners use them for an addition to a house, or to help keep a bonus room at the perfect temperature.  They operate similar to a heat pump, but with a sleeker and smaller design.

Benefits of ductless systems

  • Perfect for spaces that don’t have duct work. If the space you are trying to heat and cool doesn’t have a way to run duct work, these are a great solution.

  • One of the most efficient and low cost options for heating and cooling your home. They use very little electricity so your power bill is much less than a traditional electric furnace or air conditioning bill.

  • Quiet: Typically ductless systems create less sound than central air. Most owners don’t even know if the system is running because they make almost no noise inside the house and the outdoor unit has a minimal output for sound.

  • Clean: Since this system is electric, it does not put any emissions into the air making it environmentally friendly.

  • Warranty: Most Ductless systems come with at least a 10 year warranty of parts giving you peace of mind.
